Originally announced during Bethesda’s E3 show a few months ago, Xbox One players who either pre-ordered a copy of Fallout 4 or purchase the game digitally through the Xbox One store will receive a code to download Fallout 3 for free thanks to the console’s new backward compatible feature. While this promotion has been known for quite a while, one aspect that recently surfaced is the expiration date for the deal, which is February of next year.

The expiration date was discovered on the Fallout 4 Xbox One game page, which states that “through February 8, 2016, purchase Fallout 4 and receive Fallout 3 on Xbox 360.” Interestingly enough, the Fallout 4 page on Xbox.com continues to use vague language saying the offer is only available for a limited time. Microsoft is set to launch the new Xbox One Experience tomorrow for all current Xbox One owners, and while the update includes a number of tweaks and updates, the crown jewel for many will be the Xbox 360 backward compatibility. Just recently, Microsoft released the official backward compatibility game list, which includes titles like Borderlands and Mass Effect among the 100 in the first wave. There are obviously some omissions, including The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, but remember that this is just the beginning. Also, we would be shocked if Skyrim didn’t make the cut, since Bethesda confirmed work on an Xbox One port as part of their Fallout 4 current-gen development preparation.

Bethesda is not the only company using this new backward compatibility feature to entice pre-order incentives for Xbox One owners either. Ubisoft is packaging both Rainbow Six Vegas titles in with a pre-order of the upcoming Rainbow Six Siege, and Square Enix is also utilizing this tactic for people who pre-order Just Cause 3 on the Xbox One by granting a free copy of Just Cause 2 as well. Even Gears of War: Ultimate Edition got in on the action by giving players access to all of the other titles once they’re available through backward compatibility. Currently, there isn’t word if these promotions have a similar end date to what Bethesda is doing with Fallout 3, but fans shouldn’t be surprised to see a trend develop.
