Router Serial Number

Learning has never been so easy!

Oct 15, 2018 - The serial number assigned to your NETGEAR home product is usually located on the product’s back, bottom, or side panel. For NETGEAR business products, see How do I find my NETGEAR business product’s serial number? WiFi Modem Routers. Do not use numbers printed on retail boxes because these numbers might not be device specific. If you do not see a version number like v2 or v3, then your device is a v1 model. If SP appears after the version number, for example WGR614v9SP, then the model is specific to an Internet service provider (ISP). Mod Port Model Serial # Versions. In CAT4006 running older code, sh ver will not give the correct serial number. You can use 'sh sprom chassis'. If you have a CAT6000 running native IOS, you can use 'sh idprom all' For routers, try using 'show diag'. You could also use SNMP to gather serial numbers. Many thanks to everyone, but the numbers on my router that should be the router serial number do not get me access to the router interface. My desktop is 5 years old and I will need to repalce it in the not-to-distant future. At that point I will probably rest the router and/or upgrade it.

Cisco devices have a standard serial number, from the serial number you can work out it's age and the location it was built.

Where is the serial number of the router. Of course, you will need to know serial numbers up front and manually input it on all your routers, but once you have it setup, you can use 'show run' or 'show snmp' to view the chassis-id (serial number).

To decipher the serial number, here's how it is composed.
Cisco S/N format is LLLYYWWXXXX.
LLL = Location code (i.e. FOC = FoxConn China)
YY = Year code (08 = 2004...09=2005...etc...)
WW = Week code (weeks 01 to 52)
XXXX = Base-34 Alpha Numeric Unique identifier (Includes 0 to 9 & entire alphabet except I & O).

With the answers to these questions, along with the model of your router, you can find the part number of the cable required from the tables that follow. Devices that communicate over a serial interface are divided into two classes: DTE and DCE. One of the critical parts of setting up any router is the selection of the serial cables to connect the router to the serial devices in your network. There are so many different serial cables, with seemingly similar features, finding the correct cable can be tricky.
